Political Statements at the Met Gala

On September 13, scores of celebrities, designers, and public figures made an appearance at the long-awaited Met Gala. We're used to seeing extravagant and rather perfunctory fashion looks on the Met Gala carpet, but this year, many celebrity attendees made powerful political statements.Given the theme of “American Independence,” and the fractious time that we are in with social injustices and inequalities being further highlighted, there seems to be no better time to make such powerful political statements.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, notable U.S. Representative, wore one of the buzziest outfits of the evening. Teaming up with designer Aurora James, AOC wore a white off-the-shoulder gown with the phrase “Tax the rich '' boldly written on the back.

Wealth inequality has long been an issue on the storefront of America. AOC’s demonstration of her political beliefs on this particular issue seems fitting given this year’s theme.

Carolyn B. Maloney

The congresswoman wore a look that paid homage to the women's rights movement. The dress read “Equal rights for women,” and her clutch read, “ERA YES.” Though I am not necessarily a fan of Carolyn B. Maloney or a supporter of some of the questionable (and definitely problematic) actions she has made in the past, her message with this look is undoubtedly one I wholeheartedly agree with.

Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevigne opted for an ensemble by Dior with the phrase, "Peg the patriarchy," embroidered across her chest in all caps. While her look wasn’t necessarily as avant garde as some of the others we have seen, it definitely garnered much needed attention. The model's message: It's time to dismantle the archaic and misogynistic systems that hold women back, in fashion and beyond.

Dan Levy

Dan Levy wore a look that was full of pride. His look at a centerpiece illustration of two men kissing, which, according to Levy, was meant to make a declarative and proud statement of queer love.

Nikkie de Jager

Nikkie de Jager, aka Nikkie Tutorials, wore a turquoise gown embellished with colorful flowers and a message that read “pay it no mind.” Her look was an homage to activist and drag queen Marsha P. Johnson who notably said those words when questioned about gender.
