An Update on Ukraine 3 Weeks Into War

Three weeks ago today, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine. In a video address on February 24, Putin announced a "special military operation" against Ukraine. Almost immediately after releasing the address, explosions began around the country. In his address, Putin stated, "Whoever tries to hinder us, or threaten our country or our people, should know that Russia's response will be immediate and will lead you to consequences that you have never faced in your history. We are ready for any turn of events. All necessary decisions in this regard have been made. I hope that I will be heard." A lot has unfolded since the war began and it is important that we stay informed. Here are several important updates you should know about.

  1. More than 3 million refugees have fled Ukraine into neighboring countries since February 24- including over 1.4 million children

  2. After three weeks of sustained combat, the Russian military has failed to capture the major urban population centers of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol or Odessa. Despite being significantly outnumbered and outgunned, the Ukrainian defenders have carried out an effective resistance, essentially slowing Russia's advance to a crawl. Ukrainian forces have also killed three Russian generals since the war started.

  3. President Zelenskyy has evaded more than a dozen assassination attempts and continues to deliver daily updates. Zelenskyy, who has combated disinformation about his whereabouts with daily video evidence of him in Kyiv, has proven himself to be a true leader during this war. His firm, pointed videos have been addressed largely to the people of Ukraine but also to the leaders of western nations, urging them to meet the moment and help Ukraine.

  4. Since the beginning of the war, sanctions have been placed on Russia by the United States, NATO and EU states. Hundreds of international companies such as Apple, McDonald's, and JP Morgan have also divested from Russia by ceasing operations in the country. Key members of Putin's inner circle, including Putin himself, have also become the target of international sanctions. Various Russian banks were cut off from SWIFT. (SWIFT, per NPR, is "a global messaging system used by banks worldwide to conduct their business and issue payments. It's a key system when it comes to a country's ability to participate in international trade.") The sanctions have deeply impacted the Russian economy; the ruble has plummeted and consumer prices have skyrocketed. According to an analysis by the Institute of International Finance, Russia's economy could shrink by 15 percent due to the sanctions placed on them.
